Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that now appear at the very top of many Google searches, above the normal links. For some questions, that summary is the only thing a searcher reads. Here’s how to be part of it.
What is a Google AI Overview?
It’s an answer Google’s AI writes by pulling from multiple web pages, shown above the blue links. It often cites the sources it used, with links. If your page is one of those sources, you get visibility — and a click — right at the top.
How do I get into an AI Overview?
You can’t buy or directly request it. Google’s AI builds the summary from pages it already trusts and finds relevant. The way in is the same as ranking well, with a tilt toward clarity:
- Answer the specific question plainly, early on the page.
- Use clear headings that match how people ask things.
- Be a page Google already considers relevant and trustworthy for the topic.

Does my page need to rank #1 to be cited?
Not necessarily — Overviews sometimes pull from pages that aren’t the top blue link. But there’s strong overlap: pages Google trusts enough to rank well are the pool it draws from. Solid SEO makes you eligible.

Will AI Overviews cost me clicks?
Sometimes a searcher gets their answer without clicking. But being cited in the Overview keeps you visible and still earns clicks from people who want more. The losing position is being absent entirely — neither in the Overview nor the links.

What’s the practical first step?
Pick the real questions your customers ask and make sure you have a page that answers each one clearly and directly. That same clarity helps you rank, get cited in Overviews, and get recommended by chat assistants.
